New Travel Ban Announced

New Travel Ban Announced

On June 4, 2025, President Trump issued a new rule to protect the United States from foreign terrorists and other threats. This rule stops people from certain countries from coming to the U.S. The rule starts on Monday, June 9, 2025, at 12:01 am EDT.

Why the Ban?

The government says the ban is to keep the country safe. They looked at things like how well each country checks people before they travel, shares information, and handles risks like terrorism.

Who is Affected?

Full Travel Ban: People from these countries cannot come to the U.S. at all:

  • Afghanistan
  • Burma
  • Chad
  • Republic of Congo
  • Equatorial Guinea
  • Eritrea
  • Haiti
  • Iran
  • Libya
  • Somalia
  • Sudan
  • Yemen

Partial Travel Ban: People from these countries can come to the U.S. but with more restrictions:

  • Burundi
  • Cuba
  • Laos
  • Sierra Leone
  • Togo
  • Turkmenistan
  • Venezuela

Possible Future Ban: The government is looking at Egypt and might add it to the ban later.

Who is Not Affected?

The ban does not apply to:

Exceptions

The Attorney General and Secretary of State can make exceptions if it helps the U.S., like for witnesses in criminal cases. These exceptions will be rare and the rules are not clear yet.

Review Process

Every 90 days, the government will review the ban and decide if it should continue, change, or end.

Harvard University Ban

Another rule stops students from certain countries from attending Harvard University starting June 4, 2025. Current students might lose their visas. This rule will also be reviewed in 90 days.

Concerns

The ban might affect people trying to get visas or enter the U.S. even if they already have a visa.
