On July 4, 2025, the President signed into law the "One Big Beautiful Bill," formally known as H.R. 1, following its passage by Congress. This legislation contains numerous provisions that significantly impact immigration, and it's essential to understand these changes.
One of the most notable changes is the sharp increase in immigration-related application and processing fees, many of which are non-waivable. Asylum seekers must now pay a $1,000 initial filing fee, a $100 annual fee if the case remains pending, and $550 for an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) initially, with EAD renewals costing $275. Temporary Protected Status (TPS) applicants face a $500 application fee and $550 for an EAD, with EAD renewals costing $275. Additionally, parole requests, such as humanitarian parole, must pay a $1,000 fee and $550 for an EAD, with EAD renewals costing $275.
For those involved in the legal process, the bill introduces significant fee increases. Appeals and motions now cost $900, up from $110. Adjustments of status (green card via court) now requires a $1,500 fee. Inadmissibility waivers now cost $1,050 and motions to reopen/consider now cost $900.
The bill also imposes new penalties and fees for various immigration-related infractions. Nonimmigrant visa holders must pay a Visa Integrity Fee of at least $250. There is a Form I-94 fee of $30 for arrival/departure.
