Undocumented Immigrants in the U.S.

In 2022, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security reported that there were approximately 11.0 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States. This was a 4.6% increase from 2020 but a 5.2% decrease from the 11.6 million recorded in 2010. Most of these immigrants have lived in the U.S. for more than a decade, showing that undocumented immigrants are getting older and facing challenges due to the lack of legal pathways.

While immigrants from Mexico remain the largest group, their numbers have been decreasing since 2010. There have been declines in immigrants from India and China, but an increase in immigrants from Guatemala and Honduras. The changing migration patterns are likely due to worsening conditions, economic challenges, and climate impacts in the countries of origin.

In the U.S., about half of all undocumented immigrants in 2022 lived in California, Florida, or Texas. Along with these three states, around three-quarters of the undocumented immigrant population resides in seven other states: Arizona, Georgia, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, and Washington.

The ages of undocumented immigrants have been increasing over the years, highlighting the need for policymakers and community leaders to address growing inequalities in healthcare access and socioeconomic status.
